Mike Posner is a psychotherapist and coach. Outside of running successful tech startup sales teams and helping tech founders navigate leadership, personal development, and communication skills, he's also a seasoned retreat facilitator for Techstars. He's offered to lead Propel members through one of his most impactful workshops. This session is complementary to Sessions 1 and 2 in the PROPEL programming, which are geared toward introspection and understanding of opportunity to align personal and professional goals with our values.Session style: Participants will do an individual activity beforehand that takes them through the experience of contemplating and ranking their values. We will do a visualization exercise that will bring clarity to how values shape ‘process’ rather than ‘outcome’ and then take a macro look at where values are absent or present in people’s everyday lives. Then a facilitated discussion will help participants to generate takeaways and create a plan of action.Learning objectives: In this session participants will define the hierarchy of personal values they wish to live by. They will uncover areas in their lives where they are not being guided by their values and understand the impact that way of living is having on them. Finally, participants will initiate an action plan to live a life more intentionally anchored to their values.Expectations: This session will encourage participation. We might get into work that looks at where values emanate from and explore painful experiences in early life that may be shaping our value systems (both positively and negatively). Because of the nature of these prompts vulnerability and a willingness to share can make this session more productive.Subject matter info: Austrian neurologist, Holocaust survivor, and Man’s Search for Meaning author, Viktor Frankl, said that man is “pushed by drives and pulled by values." But before we can let our values illuminate our paths, we need to know what they are. Therefore you must take time to define your values so that you can live by them. Without having a well-defined sense of which values are most important to you, things can feel empty and meaningless. It becomes easy to make bad choices and the norm to lack confidence or fret over what you should or shouldn’t be doing.
